Brand: Nest
Safety shouldn't be annoying. The Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm quiets down when you wave - no more swinging towels or brooms - and sends a message to your phone if the alarm goes off or the batteries run low. Instead of just chirping and howling at you, Nest Protect speaks with a human voice. It gives you a friendly Heads-Up before burning toast turns into an emergency, and tells you which room the smoke or CO is. Low-battery chirps ever rattle your dreams? Nightly Promise shows you its sensors & batteries are working before you doze off.
Meet Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm.
The Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm quiets down with a wave and sends notifications to your phone if an alarm goes off or its batteries are low. No more waking up at 2am to low-battery chirps that could be coming from anywhere. Make sure you have the right Nest Protect for your home — Battery or Wired 120V. Just check whether your current smoke alarm is connected to wires in your wall or ceiling.
Safety shouldn't be annoying.
We all know why smoke alarms are torn off the ceiling or missing batteries: because every time you make stir-fry, the smoke alarm cries wolf. Or just as you're falling asleep, you hear a low-battery chirp. They've become annoying. And that's a safety issue.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), almost two-thirds of US home fire deaths happened in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
So we made something new. Meet the Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm.
Get a Heads-Up before the emergency.
Before turning on a loud, howling alarm, Nest Protect gives you an early warning. We call it Heads-Up — Nest Protect lights up yellow and speaks with a human voice, telling you where and what the problem is so you can take care of it in peace.
Always know. From anywhere.
Get a message on your smartphone or tablet if the smoke or carbon monoxide alarm goes off. You can also check the status of batteries and sensors on the Nest app, since Nest Protect constantly monitors itself. And if its batteries are low, you'll get a message on your phone.
Makes you a promise.
As you turn off the lights before bed, you'll see your Nest Protect glow green for a second. That means batteries and sensors are working. It also means you won't be waking up at 2am to low-battery chirps.
Sees what's invisible.
You can't see carbon monoxide. Or smell it. It's early symptoms are easily mistaken for the flu, but longer exposure can be deadly. That's why Nest Protect constantly looks for dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.
Silence alarms with a wave.
No more frantically swinging towels at the smoke alarm to quiet it down. If there's a nuisance alarm, just stand under Nest Protect and wave your arm to hush the alert.
A clear voice when things go wrong.
In addition to an alarm sound, Nest Protect speaks to you with a human voice. It tells you what the problem is and what room it's in. And if you have more than one Nest Protect, they connect so they can speak up at the same time even if Wi-Fi is down.
Works with your Nest Thermostat.
If Nest Protect's carbon monoxide alarm goes off, your Nest Thermostat automatically turns off your gas furnace — a possible source of poisonous carbon monoxide leaks. The Nest Protect activity sensors also improve the Auto-Away feature of your Nest Learning Thermostat.
Lights your path at night.
Next time you stumble out of bed in the middle of the night, Nest Protect will automatically light your way.
Easy installation.
Both Nest Protect (Wired 120V) or Nest Protect (Battery) take only minutes to install.
Connecting to Wi-Fi and setting them up with your iPhone, iPad, or Android device also takes just a few minutes. Every Nest Protect in your home will connect to the others automatically.

Three things to know before you purchase Nest Protect
First, let me say that we own a first-generation Nest Thermostat, which we pre-ordered and received as soon as they came on the market, and we have been pretty happy with it and its features, despite the price. Also, although Nest isn't affiliated with Apple, I'm a self-admitted Apple fan, and there are definitely strong Apple influences in the Nest products -- in this case, some good, some bad.
We had pre-ordered five from Nest directly (the max you could pre-order) but saw them on display at Home Depot this weekend and purchased both a wired and battery operated unit, because we were excited to get them home and install them. As we opened them up and started reading the instructions, a few major product shortcomings came to light, that aren't really stated in any of the official Nest marketing materials, and if the facts are there, the way these facts are major limitations to certain households aren't obvious.
Given the $129 price tag, I expect the thing to do...
Great Product, Highly Recommend.
I purchased six of these for my entire house. Probably one of the best investments I have installed, as far as safety and convenience go, so far.
The smoke detectors I had previously were VERY sensitive and would go off even when no one could see any smoke in the house (normally from cooking greasier foods -bacon-, and a time or two something has boiled over in the oven).
Much like in the Nest video, I was one of those individuals that could only wave a towel at the alarm so many times before I would end up taking off the ceiling and taking out the battery. Not safe, but it was the only way to get through dinner sometimes. I'm not the only one in the neighborhood with this issue either. I can hear one of the neighbor's alarms going off on nearly a daily basis, and I doubt there are that many bad cooks in the area, despite what others may claim. These contractor installed alarms are just too sensitive.
Although the whole house needs to have the...
Excellent for a new product line with room to improve
I already have a nest thermostat which I LOVE. it is probably one of the best designed products I use on a daily basis. I can't say enough good things about it.
I just bought some nest protect smoke + CO alarms. Here are some first impressions:
1. The units are smaller than I imagined and that is good. they are well made. The packaging is simple but impeccable. Everything fits like a glove. Everything is recyclable.
2. The nest iPad app is better than the previous version (before the Protect) but it still buries information too deeply. Too "nested" if you will. iPhone app is slightly better on this regard.
3. Set up was surprisingly hard. They put a QR code on the back of the detector. Excellent! I thought to myself. Now I don't have to type the unique ID to configure the device. Yes, but do the natural thing and turn it upside down and you will press the button which controls the device and likely switch modes or something else bad. I set...
