Outstanding Engineering, Poor Machining
This is an engineering masterpiece. The design is borderline artistic. For something that could, in many circumstances, be an eyesore in front of a home, this system is very nice and professional looking. The backboard is tough polycarbonate and at 50", it is similar to what the pros use. It has the NBA look in its markings and logo. The unit is designed to lean away from the base, which allows for lay-ups without landing on the base or ramming into the pole. Safety wise, the 300 lb base is more than sufficient to hold the whole system upright even when dunking or when the winds wind up. Also, at 300 pounds, it isn't easy to steal!
The rim design is amazing. The spring system keeps movement in the rim to prevent backboard damage, but the ball doesn't come springing off the rim unnaturally. Rebounding is like it should be. Also, while the rim and backboard do move a little on a missed shot, they don't sway around for a few seconds like many portable systems do. On...
Good (but not great) for the money
Quality must be compared with what it costs when we buy things. It's relative.(When we buy ANYTHING at the dollar store, we don't expect it to last.) With that, I'd say that this Spalding 50" Polycarbonate Backboard basketball system is pretty darn good for the money. (I paid about $180 on sale at Target.) So here's my review comments after assembling it and kids and I using for a day or two:
> I was a bit nervous about the time to assemble based upon other review comments, especially since I always take longer than others. I am happy to report that my wife was amazed that I was done in about 6 hours, doing it by myself (with small assist from wife/kids at very end to hold backboard in place while I bolted it to pole).
> This assembly time included a few times when I had to drill out a hole where the bolt was simple not fitting. Most bolts fit either straight away or, according to manual, inserting and wiggling around. I recommend that you try your best not to drill...
Poorly machined; a beast to set up; decent system
This is a decent basketball system, but the assembly was ridiculously difficult. I'm fairly handy and have all the necessary tools (including ratchet set -- highly recommended), and it took me and a neighbor about four hours. In the end we never could get the supports and shield at the base to line up properly. Like the other reviews mention, the instructions are not all correct, and the pictures even contradict themselves or the narrative instructions at points. The backboard and hoop are decent for a portable polycarbonate system, but the assembly was needlessly complicated and the end result is less stable than it could have been.
To be fair, my son would like me to add that he has already spent hours shooting hoops, and loves it. The spring that aids in raising and lowering the backboard is very nice. (However, we have had to use two people in order to get it to a full 10 feet because the adjustment handle has almost no leverage at that height.) That said, though,...
